Patriotic Patties

Okay, so there's not red, white and blue! But what could be better on the 4th of July than a hamburger? This is actually an inside out cheeseburger because we put the cheese on the inside.

The recipe calls for cheddar but we actually made two batches. We did cheddar for the kids and off camera we make a batch with blue cheese for the adults.

Makes 4 burgers

You'll need:

  • 1 pound of lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup of onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1/4 pound medium sharp cheddar - in a block
  • Multigrain buns
  • A lot of adult help for the grill

Equipment:

  • A large bowl
  • A fork
  • Oven mitts
  • A long handled spatula
  • BBQ grill
  • A serving platter
  1. Ask the adult who's helping you to fire up the grill. If you're using charcoal in stead of gas this may take quite a while, so plan ahead.
  2. Cut the cheese into 1 inch squares that are about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Put the ground beef, onion, egg and pepper in the bowl. You can use a fork to mix but we think hands work much better.
  4. While your hands are still gucky, split the meat into four portions and form patties.
  5. Place a hunk of cheese in the middle of each patty. Pull the sides up around it.
  6. Reform the patty making sure that the meat completely surrounds the cheese. As the burgers cook the cheese will melt and you don't want all that lovely cheese leaking out.
  7. Ask your adult helper to place the patties on the grill. Depending on how you like your burgers done it should take about 7 to 10 minutes on a side. Sade's mom, Miss Cathy flipped four times, giving the burger about 5 minutes on each side.
  8. When the burgers are done, transfer them to a serving platter and serve with your favorite condiments.
